Web 2.0 Supply and Demand

Trends No Comments »

Yesterday, I mentioned in my blog posting that we hear a new Web 2.0 service almost every day. It seems that I underestimate the number. Check Rusell Beattie’s posting today, 2.0 Much Supply.Web 2.0 subway map

…?X number of websites that do Y? articles where X is usually a much higher number than you?d think possible and Y is something that a year ago probably didn?t exist as a service.

There are some interesting number from Russell’s posting, such as 120+ resources for bloggers, 30+ Wiki tools,30+ tagging tools and many more.

I am just wondering are they planning to make money. If yes, how are they going to find their customers. Well, may be mergers and acquisition is the answer.

Let’s see how Web 2.0 will look like next year.

Web 2.Overload

Trends 3 Comments »

We hear a new Web 2.0 service is launched almost every day. A new blog is created every second every day. I am now experiencing a syndrome, called Web 2.Overload.Web 2.Overload

Here is the copy from my Google Readers account:

From your 145 subscriptions, over the last 30 days you read 6,144 items, starred 32 items, and shared 17 items.

If I spent 30 seconds in average to read one item; it means I have spent 51.2 hours in the last 30 days to read my feeds. That’s almost 2 hours every day!

I am pretty sure many of you have the same problem with me. Do you have any tips to overcome this problem? I realize that many of items in my feeds are not in my interests. The question is how to filter them.

Reading blogs is one aspect of my Web 2.Overload syndrome. Participating to Web 2.0 is another aspect. I am currently maintaining four blogs. It always takes time to do blogging. That’s why, I cannot write a new posting every day.

Besides that, I have many other Web 2.0 accounts. I don’t even remember the exact number any more. I have more than 10 accounts in various social networking sites, such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Friendster, MySpace, Multiply, Yahoo! 360, Windows Live Spaces and some infamous ones. Imagine if I have to update my profile, I have to login to each one of them.

How do you overcome your Web 2.Overload?

Save Our Planet

Environmental issue seems to be keyword these days. We hear global warming, energy saving and many other terms almost everyday.

Yesterday, Nokia announced that they become the first phone makers to add energy saving alerts to their devices.

The alerts are one of a series of environmental initiatives that mobile manufacturers, led by Nokia, agreed to take action on this year. Nokia is the first of these manufacturers to implement the alerts into its products.

This is not the first action from Nokia to become a “greener” company. They have started a program last year, called Take-back and recycle, where we can send our unused phones to be recycled.

Nokia’s idea is to make it easier for consumers to act green by offering the possibility to return old, unused phones and accessories. Authorized Nokia Service Points, flagship stores, municipal collections, industry association’s collections, or retailers’ campaigns are all possible channels for returning used products. How to save the climate - Join the energy revolution

Many other big companies are serious about these environmental issues. Steve Jobs from Apple wrote an open letter about “A Greener Apple” last week.

And we plan to bring other environmental issues to the table as well, such as the energy efficiency of the products in our industry. We are also beginning to explore the overall carbon “footprint” of our products, and may have some interesting data and issues to share later this year.

As the end users as well as mobile developers, should we do something? Yes, for sure. We need to take actions to save our planet. It’s not for us, but for our children. There is a free booklet from Greenpeace, Your Personal Guide to Helping Save the Climate, which discusses some tips to save our lovely planet. Here are some of them:

  • Buy the most energy-efficient products.
  • Do your PC a favor and let it get some sleep.
  • Don’t leave chargers and transformers plugged in. This is exactly the reason why Nokia adds energy saving alerts into their latest devices.
