The source code of Screenshot for Symbian OS version 2.71 has been released. What’s new? Backup/Restore!

Finally I have managed to make backup/restore fully working. For you who have installed Screenshot for Symbian OS (S60 3rd) version 2.60 or 2.70 may notice that backup/restore does not work properly. When you restore, the image that is supposed be displayed on the main window disappear.

I am sorry it took quite some time to fix this problem. The problem is because backup/restore does not work with developer certificate from Symbian Signed. That’s why I could not properly test it. I had to submit the application to Symbian Signed and hope the best that everything works. Unfortunately, it is not the case.

So, how could I fix the problem? Thanks to Eric from NewLC.com. He just published an article, How to enable backup and restore for Symbian OS applications, that helps me a lot. He mentioned that backup/restore works for self-signed certificate. Great! Although I cannot use developer certificate for testing, I can use self-signed certificate. Well, I had to tweak my application a little bit because it uses protected SID; while we need unprotected SID for self-signed certificate.

No worry if you don’t understand what I was talking in the previous paragraph. The important is that the backup/restore now works. I am happy now…. :)

Finally… after being stuck in the Symbian Signed for around 5 weeks, Screenshot for Symbian OS (S60 3rd) version 2.60 is released. What’s new in this version?Screenshot for Symbian OS (S60 3rd)

  • New icon. The icon looks like the picture on the right side. Thanks to Pietro Paschino who has kindly designed this new icon for us.
  • Support backup/restore. Unfortunately, this feature does not work properly yet. The picture, which is supposed to be displayed on the main window, is not restored at all. :(
You may ask, didn’t I test backup/restore feature before submitting it to Symbian OS. The answer is no, I didn’t test it. Why? Because there is a bug in the current Symbian OS version that we cannot test backup/restore using developer certificate.

I would like also to remind you that Screenshot for Symbian OS version 2.70 is already available on SourceForge.net. There are several versions available, i.e. S60 1st/2nd, S60 3rd and UIQ 2. The complete source code is also available there. Note that the version for S60 3rd Edition is unsigned. I need a couple of weeks to get sign it via Symbian Signed.

Actually I don’t want to reveal this today because there are still some other things to do. Unfortunately (or may be fortunately) cyke64 has smelled this new project. That’s why; I decided to officially announce it today.

Ladies and gentlemen… I am proudly announcing Screenshot for Symbian OS goes open source. The source code is hosted by SourceForget.net at http://sourceforge.net/projects/screenshot-sos/. The project is distributed under GPL (General Public License) scheme.

Why do I decide to make the application as an open source project?

  • I want to give this application to the Symbian OS community out there. I have chosen GPL scheme to make sure that everybody can receive the copy of the binary as well as the source code free of charge.
  • As you may know, there are more and more Symbian OS devices coming out. Since I cannot buy and test on all of those devices, I need a way for people to helping me to debug and fix any problem and/or binary breaks.

As a starting point, I publish the source code and binary (unsigned) of the beta version of Screenshot for Symbian OS version 2.70.

I hope that my small contribution is useful for the whole Symbian OS community.
