A friend of mine, Jo Stichbury, the author of two Symbian OS books, Symbian OS Explained and The Symbian Accredited Developer Primer, sent me a link to Forum Nokia Discussion Board about Nokia’s device model naming.

Have you ever wondered what does “3″ mean in Nokia 3250 or “6″ in Nokia 6680? Here is the explanation from one of the Forum Nokia Champions at the discussion board:

  • 1xxx – basic
  • 2xxx – basic expression
  • 3xxx – youth expression
  • 4xxx – Not existing due to Asian culture
  • 5xxx – Active
  • 6xxx – Classic bussiness
  • 7xxx – Fashion/experimental
  • 8xxx – Design and premium
  • 9xxx – Communicator series
  • N-series – high-end multimedia smart phones
  • E-series – high-end business smart phones
  • N-Gage – Gaming phones

Notice that they don’t have Nokia 4xxx, the same happens to Nokia N-Series. Read my other blog too, Is “4″ Unlucky Number for Nokia?
