Yet Another Discussion about Self-Signed Applications in Symbian Signed
Development August 13th. 2006, 3:19pmThere was an interesting blog posting from Simon Judge, Crippled Branded Symbian Phones. He has a concern about some Symbian OS phones that do not accept installation of self-signed certificate. It seems that some operators have requested to the phone manufacturers that only signed applications can be installed on their phones. Compare the two screenshots below. The left one is normal Symbian OS phone that accepts self-signed applications; while the right one doesn’t accept them.
Actually I just knew this issue yesterday. One user of my Screenshot application asked me, why he can only install my application. No other freeware applications can be installed on his phone. He sent email to me asking what makes my application different from the others. I replied to him that it could be because mine has Symbian Signed. After exchanging some emails, finally we found out that his operator does not allow installation of self-signed applications.
Any comments?

Well, so far this whole signing thing has stopped me developing a version of our app for 3rd edition. As a commercial app I can’t deal with having to pay to get it re-signed each time. I must admit I’ve only recently “discovered” self-signing as an option, and am looking into this now. So then my only costs will be for all the handsets I have to buy SIM-free to get it properly tested….

i think its totally disgusting how networks can do this, and from the screenshot i can tell its vodafone network, they do it on there 2nd edition symbian phones aswell, dont allow there users to install any sis files unless its been bought, and signed from them, there rip off network and it makes me sick to see it, poor people are paying to have smartphones, but cant use them to there full extent, by not being able to install apps or games or any content at all
