There was an interesting blog posting from Simon Judge, Crippled Branded Symbian Phones. He has a concern about some Symbian OS phones that do not accept installation of self-signed certificate. It seems that some operators have requested to the phone manufacturers that only signed applications can be installed on their phones. Compare the two screenshots below. The left one is normal Symbian OS phone that accepts self-signed applications; while the right one doesn’t accept them.

Installation of self-signed application  Installation of self-signed certificate

Actually I just knew this issue yesterday. One user of my Screenshot application asked me, why he can only install my application. No other freeware applications can be installed on his phone. He sent email to me asking what makes my application different from the others. I replied to him that it could be because mine has Symbian Signed. After exchanging some emails, finally we found out that his operator does not allow installation of self-signed applications.

Any comments?
