Edit Key, Shift Key, Pencil Key and ABC Key…
Development August 8th. 2006, 10:01pmI just received a complaint from the user of Screenshot for Symbian OS (for S60 3rd Edition).
Easy to install, but when trying to take screenshot, it is impossible. An instruction is given to set a shortcut to take a picture. When selecting Settings > Shortcut, this is not possible to be changed. The Shotrcut is Edit+OK, and this kind of key combination can not be found on the Nokia E61 device, not even from the manuals.
The complaint was sent via Handango, but (fortunately) Handango’s staff rejected it.
The following review was submitted to Handango. After review by the editorial team, it was determined that it should not be published on the Handango Web site. As a courtesy to you, we notify you each time a review is approved or rejected by the Handango staff. We send you the reviewer’s contact information because we realize you may want to offer technical support or other help to the customer.
Although I have tested my software on Nokia E61 and it works fine, the complaint was valid. There is no Edit key on Nokia E61. There is Shift key, which has the same function as the Edit key on other S60 phones, except Nokia N92.
What is the solution for this problem? One solution is by adding it in the FAQ section (which I have done long time ago). Another solution is by releasing a new version that checks the keypad type, whether it is T9 or QWERTY. If it is T9, the application displays Edit; if it is QWERTY, it displays Shift. It seems to be a simple solution, but wait a minute… how about localization? My software currently supports 26 languages. Oh no…

But the Nokia N92 has no pen, edit, shift or pencil key so your app won’t work on that!

@Ellie: Yes, I noticed that. I have posted a blog about this issue as well a couple of months ago. Read it at http://mobile.antonypranata.com/2006/06/02/why-nokia-remove-edit-key-in-some-future-phones/.

@agwe32: Fortunately, “Don’t remove Edit key” is one of the wishlist of early S60 adopters. Read more on Tommi’s blog here, http://blogs.s60.com/tommi/2006/09/early_adopters_wish_list_for_i.html.
